The Florida association of the court-appointed guardians who make end-of-life decisions for unconscious patients has named Michael Schiavo Guardian of the Year for carrying out the wishes of his wife Terri. The Florida State Guardianship Association said that Mr Schiavo represented the compassion and professionalism with which its members are supposed to act. "He was an ordinary guardian who carried out his duties in extraordinary ways," said past president Joan Nelson Hook. Terri Schiavo died in March after 15 years in a permanent vegetative state. It took years of court battles before Michael was able to remove the feeding tubes which were keeping his wife alive. Mr Schiavo said that the award was the first public recognition of his actions and that he was deeply thankful.
