FedEx your embryo to India

One little-known feature of surrogate motherhood is the possibility of delivering embryos by courier to a surrogate mother in India and picking up the baby at the end of the pregnancy. Although this has been going on for some time, it was given some unwelcome publicity this week when Indian customs officers in Mubai seized a shipment of frozen embryos from the US. They were to have been implanted in local surrogate mothers. Two foreign couriers for the importer, Dr Hrishikesh Pai, an IVF consultant at Lilavati Hospital, have been arrested. Dr Pai insists that the import is legal. A press release earlier this year from Dr Pai’s clinic outlined how a typical FedEx surrogacy is carried out. ~ Times of India, Sept 30
